Archivist – University of Maryland – College Park, MD

POSITION TITLE: PROJECT DIRECTOR/ARCHIVIST

The David C. Driskell Center, University of Maryland, College Park

 

The David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora seeks an Archivist to plan, organize, and implement systems and procedures for creating a collection of items donated by Prof. David C. Driskell with the goal of preserving and improving access to this collection. The Driskell Archive contains about 50,000 items, including rare books, journals, newspapers, exhibition catalogues, personal papers, and others. This position is supported by a two-year grant-funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Council on Library and Information Resources [CLIR].

The project’s goals include, a) documenting Professor Driskell’s one-of-a-kind archive; b) increasing accessibility to the collection through the Center’s on-line presence; c) updating procedures for managing the still growing archive; d) increasing the knowledge and skills of current staff and professionals to further strengthen African American museums; and e) providing educational work experience for graduate students who are interested in professional careers in museums of African American art and culture. This project is a continuation of a two-year grant awarded to the Center by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Archivist will oversee the methodology and integration of archival practices into an ever-growing corpus of materials used by scholars and students and will update the current (draft) procedures manual for archivists in museum environments. The Archivist should have a broad understanding of archival and digital technology as related to an academic research library setting as well as knowledge of emerging trends in digital technologies and archival practices. Candidates should have demonstrated organizational skills in planning, prioritizing, and achieving goals. Additionally, they must possess knowledge of archival and records management principles and practices and the data structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital collection materials. They should also have demonstrated the ability to work with databases, develop functional requirements and workflows for programmers building new content management applications. The Archivist will provide overall coordination for the project, supervise graduate students, and oversee the IT aspects –including on-line presence- of the project to improve overall collection management and accessibility. The project includes creating a new digital collection with item descriptions and establishing authority control over the Driskell archive catalog records. The archivist processes archival materials to include accessioning, arranging, and describing; appraising and preserving, as needed; plan, organize, and implement systems and procedures for maintaining the digital collection with the goal of improving accessibility. The archivist will follow the recommendations of a hired consultant archivist and report to the Driskell Center’s Acting and Interim Executive Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a graduate degree (MLS or MIM) in library science, information science, archival administration, or a related field; at least two years of relevant professional experience, including database management and project management in a research or academic library, including at least one year of experience in special collections or archives at a paraprofessional or professional level; in-depth knowledge of library/archives systems, procedures, and standards. Demonstrated knowledge of archival appraisal, preservation, arrangement, description, and access theories and procedures. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills; oral and written fluency in English. Supervisory experience; experience in project planning, management, and completion. Experience with Microsoft Access, PastPerfect, and open source software (specifically CollectiveAccess and Archivists’ Toolkit) preferred. Familiarity with web development tools. Preferred: Scholarly knowledge of and interest in African American art and culture.

Special Collections Cataloger

The Florida International University Libraries are seeking an energetic and service-oriented full-time Special Collections Cataloger. Located at the Green Library and reporting to the Head of the Cataloging Department, this position will have primary responsibility for original and complex copy cataloging and authority work for materials in the Libraries’ Special Collections. The FIU Special Collections department has as its foci the history, literature, culture, architecture and arts of the countries of the Caribbean Basin, Miami and the Florida Everglades. The department has built a core collection of books, pamphlets, documents, maps and blueprints, geared to the research and teaching needs of the university community. In addition to the printed material, the department is home to over 3000 audiovisual items (in varied formats) and over 23,000 photographs illustrating Caribbean politics from the ‘60s to the ‘80s, the Florida Everglades, early Miami and the architecture of Cuba. This collection is complemented by donations of cultural objects–handicrafts from Brazil, pre-Columbian figures from Central America, and medical equipment from Cuba and the US.

The librarian will work with the Head of Special Collections in consultation with the Head of Cataloging to establish cataloging priorities for the collection. FIU catalogers work in a statewide shared bibliographic database, currently using the Aleph library management system. Cataloging is done following national, state and local standards. The consortium of State University Libraries plans to implement RDA in synchrony with the Library of Congress on March 31, 2013. FIU catalogers contribute to NACO/SACO. Librarians are expected to participate in professional development, research, and service activities to meet the Libraries’ and University’s requirements for promotion.

 

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent

At least two years post- MLS professional cataloging experience using AACR2r, LCRI, LCSH, and MARC21 standards

Experience using OCLC and a library management system

Digital Archive Cataloging Librarian – Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – Beverly Hills, CA

The Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is hiring a full-time Digital Archive Cataloging librarian:

 

The Digital Archive Cataloging Librarian will work under the direction of the Digital Archivist. Primary duties will include data cleanup of existing records in the Library’s Digital Asset Management system and other image databases and cataloging digital images as they are ingested into the Digital Asset Management system.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

· Review work of others and correct cataloging errors and conflicts within the digital asset management system.

· Perform online original descriptive and subject cataloging for photographs and digital images in consultation with Digital Archivist as appropriate, according to in-house guidelines.

· Describe visual content of images and assign controlled vocabulary terms, maintaining accuracy and consistency.

· Update catalog records as necessary.

· Provide digital delivery of images from the Digital Image Gallery to internal and external library users as needed.

· Research and verify name, subject, and other subject headings to conform to appropriate authority files and in-house conventions.

· Handle photographic and archival materials with care, according to in-house guidelines.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

 

· A Master’s degree in library or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.

· Minimum of one year relevant cataloging experience.

· Experience cataloging using an online bibliographic utility applying AACR2 standards and LC classification system subject headings as well as experience cataloging using one or more non-MARC metadata formats

· Experience cataloging in a digital asset management system highly desirable

· Knowledge of film history

· Ability to identify a variety of photographic processes and media

· Understanding of proper handling of photographic and archival materials

· Attention to detail and accuracy with organized and orderly work habits
