RESPONSIBILITIES: The Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) seeks a dynamic, personable and innovative Deputy Director to provide strategic leadership in planning, organizing, managing and directing the operation, services and activities of the WCLS branch libraries, outreach and mobile services to meet the WCLS mission, goals and objectives.
The Deputy Director is responsible for:
Executive leadership: articulates, supports, and implements the mission, goals and policies of WCLS; serves as Executive Director in the Executive Director’s absence; works closely with the management team to improve the overall value, effectiveness and efficiency of all library resources and services.
Public Service operations: oversees and directs public services system-wide; plans, develops and coordinates the overall strategy, tactical objectives and activities that facilitate the provision of library services and the promotion of library service use.
Budget: develops and monitors the Public Services Department budget; develops projections and forecasts of operational and service needs and expenses to assist in long- and short-range planning.
Supervision: supervises public services staff; evaluates and makes recommendations on staff development needs, staffing allocations and other personnel matters.
Enhancements to staff and patron experience: develops and maintains understanding of and positive relationships with library users, staff and Friends’ groups through regular work with and visits to branch libraries; leads and works with others to evaluate, develop and improve services, patron experience, workplace environment and fiscal responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS: You are a skilled leader and manager with a strong understanding of the full range of public library services and a passionate commitment to providing the best possible patron experience. You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a proven track record of motivating and developing staff and building rapport at all levels of the organization. You have the ability to analyze situations, handle the details without losing sight of the big picture, and make solid decisions. Requires the ability to speak, understand, and write English clearly and concisely. Requires a Master’s degree in Library Science, seven or more years’ recent, progressively responsible, and professional library management experience in public services, and a Washington State Librarian Certificate (or ability to acquire Certificate); public library experience and multiple site management experience is preferred. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. LOCATION: Bellingham, located in Whatcom County, Washington. POSITION: FLSA exempt management position with 40 regular scheduled weekly hours; some evening and weekend hours may be necessary on an occasional basis. Successful candidates may be required to adapt to future schedule changes depending on library needs.
COMPENSATION: Hiring salary range between $77,521 and $90,000 annually (negotiable based on qualifications), with excellent benefits including paid vacation and sick leave, 12 paid holidays, employer-paid medical, dental, vision and long-term disability insurance, Public Employees Retirement System, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), deferred compensation plan and supplemental benefits available, and a fun and innovative work environment that values the contributions of our employees.
