The Libraries Residency Program offers an entry-level librarian an intensive three-year exposure to the various aspects of professional work within an academic library and a broad-based opportunity to begin a career in academic librarianship. In supporting the Libraries’ and the University’s commitment to achieving a culturally diverse faculty, the Resident will, over a three-year period, experience a minimum of three areas of librarianship and develop a specialization in one area. Residents will work closely with library faculty to develop skills and an understanding of academic librarianship as a whole through the introduction to the different functional areas of the library. The Residency Program will be tailored to reflect the successful candidate’s personal interests and long-term career goals. In the first year, the Resident will work in functional areas, determined mutually by the Resident’s interests and the needs of the Libraries.
The Diversity Alliance is a collaborative effort with American University, University of Iowa, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia University committed to mentoring and establishing networks for early-career librarians. The overarching goal is to provide a broad range of experiences working in an academic environment with exposure to research and scholarship. Together, the Alliance will help to build a foundation for successful career development opportunities as well as strongly support inclusion and diversity initiatives.
The incumbent will collaborate with the Diversity Alliance cohorts and attend yearly institutes as well as communicate throughout the year with peers from the participating institutions.

Structure and Responsibilities:
In the first year, the Resident will serve in three or four functional areas, determined mutually by the Resident’s interests and the needs of the Libraries.
In the second year, the resident will begin to specialize by contributing to one or two functional areas of his or her choosing, in consultation with the Library’s Resident Program Coordinator and directors in charge of the functional areas. The resident will then begin to formulate the basis for a capstone project.

The resident will also begin actively participating in Library committees, councils, and task forces. Residents will be expected to attend national and regional professional conferences related to their area of interest and specialization. The resident will also participate in program related activities and communicate with peer cohorts.
In the optional third and final year, the Resident will continue to specialize and will complete a capstone project, preferably suitable for publication, which incorporates the expertise and perspectives gained during the residency.
– Graduate of an ALA-accredited master’s degree program in library and/or information science or early career information professional;
