COMMUNICATION STRATEGIST

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for a Communication Strategist to help shape the Libraries’ ongoing communication and public relations strategy, connecting the NCSU Libraries with key target audiences including students, faculty, the university community, the public, and supporters. The Communication Strategist joins the Libraries’ external relations team, working collaboratively with colleagues throughout the library and with University Communications to further position the NCSU Libraries as a leader in library and educational innovation. The position reports to the Director of Communication Strategy.

Responsibilities

The Communication Strategist contributes to internal and external communications initiatives that enhance awareness of the library’s services, collections, spaces, and accomplishments, and cultivates relationships with key audiences, particularly students and faculty. The position produces and edits content for the Libraries’ print and online publications and works with the Director of Communication Strategy to manage media relations and the Libraries’ relationship with University Communications. S/he participates in strategic planning and development of the Libraries’ public website and social media presence, promoting creativity, quality, integrated messaging, and ease of discovery and use. This position contributes to multimedia content creation and selection for display in multiple venues, including the Hunt Library’s high­definition video walls and digital signage in the Libraries and other campus buildings. S/he works closely with colleagues throughout the Libraries in assembling and disseminating a wide range of content and serves on library­wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.

Required qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, or equivalent advanced degree
  • Relevant professional experience contributing to the communications of an organization
  • Demonstrated understanding of the mission and role of an academic research library
  • Demonstrated knowledge of integrated marketing communications, including expertise with traditional media and with online social media and marketing channels
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate, promote, and support the Libraries’ mission
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a capacity to thrive in an exciting, ambitious, future­oriented environment, and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and contribution

Preferred qualifications:

  • Relevant professional experience in a university environment
  • Relevant experience with photography, graphic design, or videography

Salary and Benefits

The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include:  24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
