Overview of the position:
The Library’s evolving Research Data Management Services works to accelerate discovery and innovation while improving UBC research excellence and collaborating closely with national colleagues to develop digital infrastructure. The Research Data Services Librarian designs and guides the implementation of research data management and curation services at UBC Library and is responsible for managing, preserving, and providing access to research data created by UBC researchers according to national best practices and policies. The role also promotes awareness of resources and services among faculty and students through outreach and liaison activities and works closely with the metadata specialists to ensure that acquired data resources are described to facilitate discoverability. The Research Data Services Librarian is a member of UBC Vice President, Research & International’s (VPRI) Advanced Research Computing (ARC) team that works in collaboration with Compute Canada and directly with the VPRI on institutional research data management and data science initiatives and programs.
- A graduate degree from an accredited school of Library, Archival and Information Science.
· Experience in academic libraries with a job portfolio including one or more aspects of scholarly communications, such as research data management, institutional repositories, open access or an in-depth subject expertise in a heavily data-focussed discipline.
· Demonstrated knowledge of research data curation trends and issues in the academic environment, including disciplinary and institutional repositories, funder and publisher mandates, data citations principles and practices and data management planning.
· Demonstrated familiarity with institutional, data or subject repository systems.
· Knowledge of technologies for data management and curation, as well as an understanding of preservation principles and practices.
· Ability to articulate a vision of the services, infrastructure and skills required to support the data needs of researchers in an academic setting.
· Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills including the ability to present and share ideas clearly and effectively and the ability to explain complex concepts to a wide variety of users in individual and group settings.
· Experience building awareness and advocacy as well as developing education programs (including assessing their effectiveness).
· Demonstrated ability to interact effectively, build consensus, and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders including faculty and staff.
· Demonstrated commitment to customer service.
· Excellent project management as well as creative and analytical thinking skills
· Knowledge of advanced research computing.
· Knowledge of Tri-Agency (NSERC, SSHRC and CIHR) and CFI funding requirements and opportunities.
· Understanding of the changing environment of scholarly communication including intellectual property and copyright issues.
· Working knowledge of metadata standards used for research data.
· Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise students; strong commitment to fostering the development of others.
· Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries and managing complex stakeholder groups to move projects forward.
· Experience acquiring data resources.
Consultation & Services
· Works as a member of the Advanced Research Computing Team (ARC)
· Works closely with the Data/GIS Librarian to increase knowledge of research data curation practices and issues, especially with liaison librarians.
· Works closely with liaison librarians to make sure they are kept informed and that they can assist in communicating research and data management support opportunities and options to faculty.
· Provides Data Management Plan support services.
· Provides outreach and individual consulting to campus researchers on data curation and scholarly communications issues, including data management planning, open access, funding agency requirements, and project design.
· Provides outreach and consults with Compute Canada leadership to inform the development of national platforms and services
· Partners with faculty and librarians to document and assess workflows and to determine best practices for data curation.
· Develops knowledge of UBC resources/facilities for data visualization. Shares this knowledge with liaison librarians and UBC researchers.
Education, Awareness, and Community Building
· Plans, trains, and coordinates data education for diverse constituents, including librarians, students, researchers, faculty and staff.
· Develops and maintains the Library’s Research Data Services website.
· Collaborates and provides leadership to UBC Library and campus partners to design, develop, and maintain research data management services and systems.
Policy and Strategy
· Recommends and develops policies, practices and workflows related to the Library’s hosting of research data.
· Ensures systematic assessment of Research Data Services in collaboration with the Assessment Librarian.
· Keeps current on issues surrounding data governance; maintains communication with campus stakeholders about data policy and strategies; makes recommendations and consults.
· Identifies staffing, operational and resource needs.
· Participates in library-wide committees, activities and special projects.
· Identifies funding opportunities and writes grant applications.
· Participates in local, regional and national initiatives that further the goals of UBC Library in supporting research data management.
· Maintains an awareness of trends and initiatives in data management through attendance and participation in professional meetings, conferences, workshops and other professional development activities.
· Provides regular and focused reporting on the impact of the Library’s work in research data management.
· Other duties as assigned.
Reports to and works under the direction of the Association University Librarian (AUL), Research Services. Collaborates with the Data/GIS Librarian to develop and grow UBC Library Data Services. Works closely with the Data/GIS Analyst. Is a member of the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) team working closely with VPRI, the Associate Director of ARC and the scientific, data and technical analysts. Provides services to campus researchers in collaboration with liaison librarians. Consults regularly with liaison librarians and faculty on data management issues and with Technical Services staff on metadata standards, licensing datasets and on developing and implementing effective metadata protocols. Close working relationship with the AUL, Digital Programs and Services, Digital Repository Librarian, Systems Librarian and the Senior Manager UBC-IT on matters relating to technical infrastructure and preservation. In addition, the Research Data Librarian may hire and supervise student assistants. The nature and scope of the responsibilities for this position is expected to change as the Library organization and digital repository services evolve.
Terms of Appointment and Salary:
This position will be filled as a full time ongoing position. If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary appointment. Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of the appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment.
Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
