Student Intern – Poynter Legislative Research Library – Louisiana House of Representatives – Baton Rouge, LA

The Poynter Legislative Research Library has an opening for a graduate assistant. It is a 20 hour year round position. The library’s hours when the legislature is not in session are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During legislative session hours extend to 6:00 p.m. and some weekend work may be required. The library is located on the 13th floor of the Louisiana State Capitol.

Students working in this position gain experience with government information, legislative procedure, indexing procedure, and librarianship.

Work duties for the position include:
Answering the PULS Line (Public Legislative Research Service) questions on legislation, legislative procedure & websites
Data entry in our Inmagic catalog and databases
Scanning of historical records
Processing of legislation for librarian indexing
General clerical duties
Editing of the scanned Proceedings of the Constitutional Convention of 1973

Desire to serve the people of Louisiana
Currently enrolled at university
Good communications skills — friendly, ability to interact with citizens of all ages, backgrounds, & educational levels
Basic computer literacy — word processing, E-mail, Internet
Accurate typing/keyboarding skills
Attention to detail
Ability to reach, bend, stoop as necessary in order to retrieve or file documents, books, office supplies
Interest in government information, the legislature, and/or the law preferred
