The iSchool at the University of Maryland is looking for a qualified individual for the position of Advisor who will serve as a member of a multifunctional student services team and report directly to the Coordinator of Graduate Student Services. The primary responsibilities are to provide academic advising for graduate students and enrollment advising for prospective students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide academic advising for current and prospective graduate students in the College of Information Studies, including information on admissions, enrollment, course selection, university policies and procedures, and degree requirements, to a student body representing a variety of backgrounds and abilities, in both one-on-one settings and group settings and in both traditional and online formats. Provide admissions assistance for multiple graduate programs, including processing and reviewing application materials, collecting enrollment data, collaborating with program managers/directors, coordinating with various university departments, and communicating with prospective students. Develop and maintain advising materials and resources, including (but not limited to) handbooks, course guides, and checklists, both virtually and in print. Assist with special events (i.e. Orientation, commencement, open house, Maryland Day), some of which may occur outside of the traditional work hours (i.e. evenings, weekends). Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of three years of progressive experience working in student services, student affairs, or other related field in higher education is required. Proficiency in oral, written, and interpersonal communication, as well as computer literacy in MS Office and other computer applications. Should possess web application skills or have a willingness to learn them. Ability to work with computer-assisted advising technology is a strong plus. Excellent customer service skills. Must have the ability to function in a team-oriented environment. Position may require evening and weekend hours. Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Education, College Student Personnel, Library and Information Science, or the Social Sciences is strongly preferred. Advanced degree can substitute for one year of professional experience as listed above.
