Kent State University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director. The School is part of the innovative and collaborative College of Communication and Information, whose other schools are Communication Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, and Visual Communication Design. The Director reports directly to the Dean of the College.
As Director, this vibrant leader and creative, entrepreneurial visionary provides strategic direction to advance the school’s global reputation and excellence in academic programs, scholarship, and service to the profession. The Director represents and promotes the School within the College and University and to prospective and current students, alumni, external organizations, agencies, and other stakeholders.
The successful candidate should possess an earned doctorate in Library and Information Science or related field, a record of research and teaching appropriate to appointment at the rank of tenured full professor based on the University’s and School’s criteria, and an established national or international scholarly reputation. The position requires strong leadership skills, as demonstrated by effective communication, diplomacy, and advocacy across multiple interest groups; a record of interdisciplinary collaboration across college and campus; and a commitment to faculty and student diversity and success. Achievement in development, fundraising, and alumni engagement is also important.
Additional requirements for this position include demonstrated experience with business models and financial management in a dynamic environment; a collaborative management style that empowers faculty participation in governance; and the ability to recruit, sustain, and cultivate faculty and staff.
The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) has a proud tradition of commitment to the professional LIS community in Ohio, with resources and newly renovated facilities at two locations in the state — on the main campus of Kent State University in Kent and in the State Library of Ohio in Columbus. The School competes in the national arena through its quality online degree programs that boast strong, healthy enrollment. Creative, innovative, collaborative and highly productive faculty puts the School in the international spotlight with an excellent record of scholarship, teaching and obtaining grants. SLIS offers an ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), a Master of Science (MS) in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management (IAKM), and a number of certificates. The School also offers specialized areas of study as part of the college-wide, interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Communication and Information. The MLIS is ranked 18th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and the youth services specialization ranks 10th. Program strengths include a concentration in K-12 school librarianship and specializations in public librarianship, children’s and young adult librarianship, organization of information, digital preservation, and museum studies, among others. The MS in IAKM offers concentrations in the emerging fields of health informatics, knowledge management, and user experience design. Both degrees are offered fully online.
