The Smithsonian Libraries invites applicants for the position of Head of the Natural and Physical Sciences department. This federal position, Supervisory Librarian, GS-1410-14, closes on 09/25/2015.

This position is located within the Reader Services Division of the Smithsonian Libraries. The employee provides leadership in managing the services, collections, and staff of the libraries of the National Museum of Natural History (including the Botany/Horticulture Library, the Anthropology Library, and 11 specialized library collections throughout the NMNH building), the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Library, and the National Zoological Park Library (including the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute).

DUTIES:
Performs the full range of personnel management duties for the Natural and Physical Science Department.
The department head coordinates the services and work of the staff in the branches of the Natural and Physical Science Department.
The Department Head reviews long- and short-range plans, resource projections, and priorities to recommend adjustments as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Final applicants will be required to provide work samples or conduct a presentation.

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as: activities such as forming project plans, carrying out and developing policies and procedures crucial to library operations; providing guidance to professional staff that provide reference services in a research environment; and collection development.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
