Position: Head of Youth Services, Putnam County Public Library

The Putnam County Public Library is hiring for the position of Youth Services Department Manager to help shape and promote the library’s Children’s and Young Adult services models. This full time librarian position will involve managing a team of library professionals while collaborating across departments with other managers to support the development of new library initiatives.

The Youth Services Department Manager oversees the youth services area and related programming including (but not limited to):

● managing collections, services, and activities within the library’s Imagination Portal area

● coordinating and facilitating on­site patron technology support services within the library’s Imagination Portal

● assisting in the development and promotion of children’s and young adult literacy programming

● collection development and selection duties for various print and non­print collections within the department

● providing general reference assistance (locating materials, satisfying inquiries, and guiding patrons toward the use of appropriate tools and the development of essential literacy skills)

● working directly with children and parents on use of technology, literary materials, and other resources

● working with the Children’s Outreach librarian to coordinate programming and materials delivery services throughout the community

The Youth Services Manager is also a part of the library’s management team and, as such, collaborates with other department heads as well as the library director through:

● department heads meetings

● monthly department reports

● occasional board presentations on department developments

● outreach opportunities within the community

Qualified candidates will have:

● a bachelor’s degree in a related field

● a master’s degree in library and/or information science/informatics (candidates currently pursuing a degree will also be considered)

● a background in children’s literature and/or programming as well as collection development and selection for a variety of children’s library material types preferred

● strong technology skills (as both a user and a support professional)

● a focus on and clear understanding of the 21st century librarian ethos

Job Details:

Full Time w/benefits

35 hr/wk

Some nights and weekends may be required
