Library Associate I
This is an entry level para-professional position that involves the application of a
thorough knowledge of the procedures of a library and a working knowledge of
modern library techniques. The incumbent performs various technical tasks in
connection with the daily operation of the library and even exercises independent
judgement in some operations. Emphasis is on the technical rather than the
professional aspects of library work.
Essential Job Duties:
Opens and closes the service points or location;
Charges and discharges library materials; assists in keeping the daily and monthly departmental
statistics; prepares reserve cards and requests for patrons.
Assists patrons by telephone and in person with routine procedural and directional
questions; processes and issues library cards; assists patrons with automated products.
Verifies patron and circulation information by use of computer terminal; processes reserves;
empties book drops and returns materials to the designated branch for processing
the re-shelving; notifies patrons when reserves are available.
Collects fines and fees from patrons
Assists with special projects, programs, or specialized library area.
Maintains library materials and equipment in an assigned library area.
Performs related lower level work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of library techniques, systems, circulation, and procedures.
Working knowledge of library material and tools.
Positive attitude toward public service work; considerable knowledge of customer service
principles and techniques.
Knowledge of the general rules and regulations of the public library system.
Ability to communicate in verbal and written formats; ability to understand, follow,
and communicate verbal and written instructions.
Ability to handle simple monetary transactions.
Considerable ability to accurately perform data entry work on computer workstations.
Ability to learn routine and specific tasks within a reasonable time period.
Ability to make decisions in accordance with library policies and procedures.
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
Must be able to work nights and weekends.
Must be able to stand for extensive periods of time during work.
Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
Must be able to work at any location in the New Orleans Public Library System.
