Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library invites applications for the position of Archivist. Our library is a dynamic organization where every staff member makes a difference. We serve the information needs of a residential campus of 2,600 students. Special Collections and College Archives includes historical manuscripts, institutional records, College photographs and documents, personal papers, oral histories, and rare books. Our archival staff provides research and instruction services, records management, and access to collections that document the history of the College as well as support a vibrant liberal arts curriculum. The Archivist reports to the Director of Special Collections and College Archives. The Archivist is responsible for the daily operations of the Archives and will collaborate with our archival staff, conservator, librarians, interns, and student assistants to connect researchers with primary sources.

 

Responsibilities include the processing of collections, leadership in records management, outreach to donors and alumni, the mentoring and supervision of interns and students, the pursuit of grants to support program initiatives, the coordination of class visits, and the creation of exhibits.

 

Our archivist will also:

· Establish best practices for the Archives in accordance with national archival standards

· Provide reference assistance and instruction to students and researchers

· Serve as the contact person for campus offices and departments regarding the transfer of physical and electronic records to the Archives

· Follow trends in the effective management of physical and born digital records

· Research, identify, and recommend items for acquisition through donation or purchase

· Promote collections, including via the web and social media

· Serve on library committees

· Gain expertise in the content of collections, particularly those that showcase the history of the College

· Benefit from continuing education/professional development opportunities

The candidate should demonstrate excellent communication skills as the Archivist will have frequent contact with campus community and outside researchers. The candidate will also need effective time management strategies. The Archivist must balance multiple duties while also serving as the project coordinator and quality control advisor for our interns and student workers.

 

Candidate must be conversant in collections management, archival standards, cataloging, digital projects, conservation, institutional repositories, copyright, and electronic records management. The successful candidate will be a creative, experienced, and resourceful archivist dedicated to undergraduate education and student/faculty research.

 

Required Qualifications:

· Completion of graduate program with a concentration in Archival Studies

· Minimum of two years experience in special collections/archives in an academic library or research institution

· Knowledge of current practices related to the identification, access, control, organization and digitization of primary source materials, including metadata schemas, digital processes, institutional repositories, and open access initiatives

· Evidence of effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

· Resourcefulness in analyzing and solving problems

· Flexibility in adapting to changing departmental and organizational priorities and evolving technologies

· Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaborate with staff at all levels of the College

· Knowledge of preservation issues and techniques for smaller archives

· Strong customer service orientation, with a commitment to participating in undergraduate education

 

Preferred Qualifications:

· Master’s degree in history or ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science

· Supervisory experience with interns and students

· Teaching experience, familiarity with information literacy concepts/trends in archival instruction

· Relevant experience integrating technology with special collections/archives work

· Understanding of scholarly communication patterns and the information needs of scholars

· Experience in seeking and administering grant funding

· Experience with records management in print and electronic formats

· Familiarity with a liberal arts environment

· Interest and participation in relevant professional organizations
